How to choose a drill bit for metal
The wrong bit burns out on the first hole. Match the bit to the metal and the speed to the bit — here's the short version.
- Stainless steel: cobalt (M35/M42) bits, slow speed, cutting oil.
- Mild steel / aluminum: black-oxide HSS is plenty.
- Hardened steel: carbide-tipped, and patience.
- Rule of thumb: harder metal → slower speed → more lubrication.
